It's a known problem - though of course, because these companies are trying to push AI into everything and oversell it to build hype and please investors, they usually try to avoid recognizing its limitations.

Frankly I think that now they should focus on making these models smaller and more efficient instead of just throwing more compute at the wall, and actually train them to completion so they'll generalize properly and be more useful.

It's kind of wild to me how many really small towns there are in the US. About 32% of towns in the U.S. have less than 500 residents.

For comparison, here in Brazil I lived most of my life in a town with ~35K residents and it was already considered a small rural town. Some of my family lives in a neighboring town with ~11K residents, and even in my hometown people joke about how small it is, and that there's basically nothing going on there. 1288 of towns in Brazil have less than 5K residents, or about 23.1%, and there are no towns with less than 500 residents. Meanwhile in the US 76% of towns have less than 5K residents.

Again, it's just kind of wild to me. I remember playing (reading?) the Echo VN and thinking "Man, a dying town with only 50 people? That doesn't sound realistic," but apparently that's way more common than I thought.

I was actually wondering how the gender gap changed in this election, and it wasn't at all what I was expecting:

According to exit polls by CNN Trump gained +2% of the male vote, and +5% of the female vote compared to 2020 - though women were still more likely to support Harris, of course.

An analysis by the AP found similar results, with the support from men under 45 increasing +7%, and women under 45 +6%, while for older men it decreased -1%, and for older women stayed the same.

Surprisingly, Trump's support among racial minority groups increased while white and older Americans increased support for Harris.

After thorough analysis and much thought I have ultimately concluded that I have absolutely no fucking clue what is going on with American politics.

There's also the problem that if the polls are crap, the results of the model will also be crap, regardless of how accurate the model is. It's similar to how publication bias affects meta-analyses. Several analysts have already argued that pollsters are unlikely to underestimate Trump again, and may in fact over-correct and underestimate Harris much like how they underestimated dems in 2022:

Despite what the law might say, there's no evidence whatsoever that letting trans people use their preferred bathroom causes any "injury or harm" to cis people.

To the contrary, there is evidence that restricting bathroom access is harmful to trans people - and cis people too, like Jay, a cis woman who was harassed in a bathroom after being mistaken for a trans person.

It’s the Palestinian American’s fault for not endorsing the genocide of their immediate friends and family.

Voting isn't a love letter, it's a chess move. Biden, Harris and other establishment liberals absolutely deserve to be relentlessly mocked and criticized (and frankly indicted) for cheerleading Israel's genocide, but aiding in the political victory of someone twice as genocidal as them, and who also intends to end democracy and target his political opponents would be a bad move.
