Mass arrests at Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade as anti-Israel protesters block path
  • Perhaps I'm not American enough to understand this, but is there some connection between the parade (or Macy's itself) and Israel?

  • Elon Musk publicized the names of U.S. government employees he wants to cut. It's terrifying federal workers
  • "If you don't like this country, move somewhere else" energy

  • Ruble Tumbles to Lowest Point Since March 2022
  • That's odd, because we've been assured by Firstname Bunchofnumbers on Twitter that sanctions aren't working.

  • yeah I built my own PC. How could you tell?
  • Sure, but that difference is less than the variability based on load. The difference in efficiency between a Gold and Platinum PSU is like 4%, but load can vary that efficiency by 10 or 15%

  • Trump Pentagon pick attacks UN and Nato and urges US to ignore Geneva conventions
  • You may have misunderstood what I'm saying. The German far-left spent its time attacking the social democrats (SPD) while the SPD were focused on stopping the Nazis. If the center and left had united, there's a very real possibility that the Nazis would never have seized power, thus preventing WW2. And the far-left, of course, were rounded up along with other undesirables. I'm sure they had mad bragging rights in the concentration camp, though -- "at least we didn't side with the centrists!"

  • yeah I built my own PC. How could you tell?
  • The PSU doesn't use more power just because it has a higher maximum capacity. Plus, a PSU is most efficient at partial loads (usually around 60-70%)

  • Trump Pentagon pick attacks UN and Nato and urges US to ignore Geneva conventions
  • The liberals who tried to stop the Nazis but then had to face attacks from people like you on the left as well? Congratulations, you must be very proud.

  • yeah I built my own PC. How could you tell?
  • Eeeewww. You know there's a panel on the other side to hide all that, right?

  • Trump Pentagon pick attacks UN and Nato and urges US to ignore Geneva conventions
  • Lol. Ironically, the left at the time (backed by Soviets) attacked liberals for not being left-wing enough. That division allowed the NSDAP to complete their seizure of power when a left+centre coalition could have stopped them.

  • Israeli Government Imposes Sanctions on Haaretz, Cuts All Ties and Pulls Advertising
  • OK, and? You're seriously trying to defend 66% civilian casualties because 70%+ is worse?

  • Ukrainian boxing champ Wladimir Klitschko calls out Rogan for ‘repeating Russian propaganda’
  • I thought they meant Vitali, but I didn't know his brother was a boxer too.

  • Israeli Government Imposes Sanctions on Haaretz, Cuts All Ties and Pulls Advertising
  • I am. Killing civilians is bad, and I don't care who does it. Only on Lemmy do we see galaxy-brains decrying Palestinian deaths while brushing off 66% civilian casualties on the Israeli side.

  • Trump Pentagon pick attacks UN and Nato and urges US to ignore Geneva conventions
  • The holocaust is Hans Vogel's fault, ackshually

  • Israeli Government Imposes Sanctions on Haaretz, Cuts All Ties and Pulls Advertising
  • Hamas targets were military targets. More than 33% killed were active IDF soldiers.

"Only two-thirds of the people killed were civilians!" is quite the defense. Impressive.

  • Israeli Government Imposes Sanctions on Haaretz, Cuts All Ties and Pulls Advertising
  • I 100% support Palestinian statehood but to deny that Hamas are terrorists is absurd. A true "freedom fighter" would attack only government and military targets and would never condone killing 500+ civilians at a music festival. Do you believe that's acceptable?

  • Huge election year worldwide sees weakening commitment to act on climate crisis
  • If we had achieved carcinization by now we wouldn't have any of these problems — we'd be locking pincers in friendship, skittering sideways across a utopic planet. Alas.

  • It's only pedophilia if the other side does it
  • Ackshually, being a pedophile and calling out pedophiles is the same thing, because in both cases you're using the word "pedophile", Checkmate, liberals!

  • What you rather?
  • Teams doesn't work well for me on Linux w/Firefox (it doesn't detect my headset properly) but it works great in Edge.

  • ‘China is not Cuba’s sugar daddy’: ties between communist nations weaken

In which China tells Cuba that it should stop being so communist if it wants to succeed:

    >China publicly supports Cuba’s right to choose its own path to economic development “in line with its national conditions”, but privately Chinese officials have long urged the Cuban leadership to shift from its vertically planned economy to something closer to the Chinese model, according to economists and diplomats briefed on the situation.

    >Chinese officials have been perplexed and frustrated at the Cuban leadership’s unwillingness to decisively implement a market-oriented reform programme despite the glaring dysfunction of the status quo, the people said.

Why does VirtualBox keep launching on boot?

    cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ca/post/28766034

    > Sorry if this kind of question isn't allowed here, but I'm at my wit's end. VB randomly started launching on startup about 2 weeks ago (on EndeavourOS) and I can't figure out why. There's no shortcut in ~/config/autostart, it isn't in the KDE startup apps list, and I can't find anything virtualbox-related with systemctl either. There's also no setting in the VB app itself. WTF?

Based on recommendations in that thread, I also checked:

    /etc/systemd/system /etc/default/ vboxautostart.service KDE "restore session" settings

    Any ideas are much appreciated!

Is there any reason I shouldn't visit?

My wife and I are thinking of going to CR this winter, but we have a few other potential destinations on our shortlist. Talk me out of going to Costa Rica!

I don't think I've seen anyone else here with an 8:9 monitor, so I'll break the ice! The color theme is Layan Light; everything else is stock KDE.

Why do you grow mushrooms? What for?

I stumbled upon this community for the first time a few minutes ago. I like gardening and houseplants, but never heard of people recretionally growing mushrooms of the non-magical kind. Is it for food?

In unsurprising news, Reddit prepares IPO

www.businessinsider.com Reddit's cofounder said that at first the company felt like 'a homework assignment that got out of hand' rather than a business

Reddit's cofounder Steve Huffman said in its early days he filled up most of the site with content using different accounts until it got more users.

Fifth Order of Angels (1974 radio broadcast)

This was recorded in Cleveland for a radio broadcast; the tape became available as a bootleg and is known as one of the most important ones in the band's history.

It's the first-ever recording of "Fly by Night" and only their third performance with Neil. We can hear snippets of what would later become "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" in the Working Man solo.

A quote from Geddy regarding bootlegs:

    >A lot of people say 'It takes away from record sales' but [...] the fact is that any fan who buys a bootleg is still going to buy your record. So, who is it harming?

USB webcam lagging only in Zoom?

Sorry if this community isn't the right place to ask — I got a USB webcam that works great in Teams, but lags tremendously (3-4 seconds) in Zoom. I doubt the Zoom app is introducing that lag on its own, but how would I troubleshoot this?

This is on EndeavourOS (basically Arch)

Just picked one up. This is the best price I've seen this year. Very strange monitor but awesome for work - it even serves as a USB-C docking station with 90W power delivery.

Why does Pandoc get updated nearly every day?

Please forgive the noobish question, but what's going on with a document converter that it gets such frequent updates (and by extension forces a ton of Haskell updates)?

Trying Fedora. Never rebooted so often in my life

Even back in the Windows 3.1 or 95 days I didn't have to reboot this often - sometimes twice a day. Seems a bit excessive?

File permissions on mounted drive - can read/write but can't drag into apps?

RESOLVED: it was caused by the app being flatpak. use Flatseal!

I have a network drive mounted to my computer (PopOS). I have read & write access to everything in the drive and can drag and drop files between two Nautilus windows, but if I try to drag a file from the network drive into an email for example, I get a popup about file permissions. Is it because flatpak apps don't inherit my user permissions?

Finally using Linux full-time thanks to PopOS

I've been using Linux on and off for about 15 years, but was never able to make the leap to using it full-time until PopOS. It's been painless to use and does everything I need with only minor tweaks. Thank you System76! I can't wait until the Cosmic DE is released.

(too bad about the name, though...)

Using Linux for work - need a good email/contacts/calendar system

(apologies in advance if this isn't the right community for this question)

I've been flirting with Linux on and off for about 15 years and I think I'm ready to make the switch mostly full-time. I use a laptop for work and have a Microsoft 365 plan with email and such. I need to replace that with something Linux-friendly and would much prefer something that works with a desktop email client. Easy syncing of email, contacts and calendar to Android is a must.

Proton seems like it might be a good option but the privacy features aren't a huge selling point for me so I'm open to other options!
