If Trumps tariffs go thru would that not cause the countries the tariffs are imposed on just raise their prices? And a result of that hurt the american consumer? Why do it to begin with?
  • The hope is that this will incentivize and result in more development of the American manufacturing sector

Tariffs alone are not enough. Expanding production is a long term investment, but there's no guarantee a tariff will still exist in 4 years. Its risky to invest capital to meet tariff-induced demand when that demand might disappear before your new factory is even finished being built.

Uncle Sam can mitigate that risk by subsidizing the construction of new factories while the tariffs are in place.

  • Elon Musk wants to radically reshape who controls America’s money supply
  • DO IT!

Seize The Fed and abolish all Federal taxes!

The Federal Government does not need tax revenue to provide services. Federal taxes just delete money in a targeted way. When the Federal Government wants to buy something, it creates the currency it spends. The balance of interest rates and Federal taxes determines the speed at which the overall supply of currency grows - either lever can be pulled to moderate inflation. Taxes make people poorer, reducing demand. High interest rates slow the growth of businesses that need to take out loans from a bank. With lower Federal taxes putting more money in people's pockets, successful businesses will be less dependent on bank loans: win-win.

Although, the clowns of the Republican circus would probably pull the wrong lever, reducing interest rates, which would necessitate increasing either taxes or inflation, leading to stagflation and recession.

The cat can't be left alone with the lettuce.
The vacuum can't be left alone with the cat.

How do you get everyone across?

  • Are you surprised by the results of the US elections, and what do you think should have been done differently?
  • This time? There was no real opportunity for meaningful change. The Democratic party is far right economically, and they depend on the donations of plutocrats and megacorps. Regardless of either Democrats or Republicans getting elected, the donor class wins and working Americans lose. Some will say Harris attempt to appeal to the right wing is what made her lose, and perhaps there is an element of truth to that. Its unlikely that the Republican base she attempted to woo would actually vote for a Black woman running as a Democrat over the old, rich White guy running as a Republican. However, the owners of the Democratic party - the ones who immediately had millions of dollars to donate the day Biden dropped out - they didn't lose. The only way the owners could lose is by appealing to progressives and winning an election.

The time to begin doing something differently was decades ago, building power and organizing from the bottom up. Socialists need to begin running in and winning local elections, and pushing hard against First Past The Post elections.

    OMG noooo!
  • I think this take is mid.

A doctor pulling in $400k a year is still working class. Even if they somehow managed to save 100% of their income, and invest it all in a portfolio that consistently grows 10% each year, and do so from age 18 to 65, then when they retire at 65 they would still not have even half of 1 billion dollars.

The truly rich, the billionaires, can "make" that much in a few days, without having to work for it.

I would prefer to tax the 1% until they're working class again before we talk about taxing the top earning people who actually work for it.

  • Ion engines could take us to the solar gravitational lens in less than 13 years
  • . . . plus however long it takes to figure out how to build a power source with 10x the energy density of any existing small nuclear reactor, or 100x the energy density of the radioisotope thermoelectric generators actually in use on spacecraft today. And it needs to run continuously, without maintenance, for >10 years.

It would be an interesting location to place a telescope.

  • Why is sucking better than blowing?
  • While blowing, some of the fan's energy is spent on increasing the pressure inside your dishwasher, which increases the density of the air the fan blades move through, increasing drag on the fan blades causing them to move slower and create less airflow.

While blowing, you're also pushing moist air to the back of the dishwasher, and after that air reaches 100% relative humidity, it can't hold any more water and will not help dry your plates. Some of it will eventually escape around the sides, but some of the airflow your fan creates just circulates humid air around the inside of the dishwasher.

Turning your fan around solved both problems. It increased the volume of air flow, and decreased the relative humidity of the air flow.

  • The ‘world’s largest’ vacuum to suck climate pollution out of the air just opened. Here’s how it works
  • CNN is notorious for stretching the truth in pursuit of the class interest of their owners.

AFAIK, the oil companies need a large volume of gas that's free from oxygen. I wonder how energy intensive this "carbon capture" tech is compared to capturing the 78% nitrogen that makes up our atmosphere? This implementation of the technology might be worse for the environment than doing nothing.
