Hey, German here. What the f*** are Americans doing at the other side of the Atlantic? Some of you already know this monstrosity. I did'nt. This is a Ford F650 Truck and when I stepped out of my Youtube Bubble I realized, it was marketed as the "biggest, baddest Truck on the road" for the everyday American. Are you guys serious?! Is the end goal really to drive a Monster Truck to McDs to get a McFlurry? Americas bloodiest wars have been fought in the middle east to secure oil, bombing nations to rubble. And all, for this bullshit? The excess, waste and decadence is mind boggling to me and people on Reddit seriously justifying this by "you know dude I'm 6,4ft. I don't fit in any other vehicle" makes me go up the wall.
If you want to be even more outraged by American stupidity, look up “rolling coal”. In short, morons buy large trucks like this and purposely detune their emissions systems to run poorly, decreasing fuel efficiency and spewing soot laden exhaust. The only purpose to do this is to piss off liberals, apparently.
The best part (/s) is when they purposefully drive in front of people with a 'wimpy' car, like a hybrid or EV or a car that isn't fuckhuge, and intentionally spews smog behind them.
Very mature folk, very stable, very safe to be around, as I'm sure you can tell.
Sadly they are not, the people that do it are the worst kind of asshole. They generally like to "roll coal" while passing electric or hybrid cars, covering them with soot. The spend thousands of dollars to be as obnoxious and wasteful as possible, all to spite "the liberals".
You know this is by no means a common vehicle right? I’ve never seen one outside of a few pictures only found on anti-car posts. F350s are even rare to see on the roads, F150s are more common than grass and F250s are a daily sight unfortunately.
This is a heavily modified F650(750?). They took a commercial truck and slapped a pickup truck body on it. It's comically useless, and costs 150 thousand dollars.
What, it exists?! I thought it was some digital creation inspired by a 350, already an awful huge truck.
Edit: had to look at Ford's website. The biggest pickup I could find there is an F450 Super Duty. There's both an F650 and 750 as trucks without beds ("straight frame"). Those actual trucks.
You actually probably see a lot of F250s and F350s, but they are used as commercial vehicles, often with stuff bolted to the bed (or in the case of the F350, sold without a bed and have aftermarket attachments).
Many tow trucks are F350s/F450s (and bigger for towing bigger vehicles), ambulances are often F550s, bucket trucks are F650s/F750s, etc.
For people who actually do a lot of hauling trailers and such, an F-250 is very sensible. Half ton pickups often have drivetrain failures when asked to haul heavy loads on the regular.
A full set of mobile mechanic tools is too much weight for half ton truck, without materials. Bigger pickups make sense for people who work trades, especially heavy ones.
Many of such tradespeople don’t have a second vehicle, especially if they bought the truck themselves (self-employed) or if their company provides and doesn’t care if they do their life stuff with it (basically free gas if you don’t abuse the privilege.)
F150s are for the weekender dads that occasionally need to haul something around. F250s and 350s are for people that actually work (usually) this monstrosity is bullshit, anyone that genuinely needs that much truck buys an actual semi or something.
Living full time in an RV I purchased a 2500 (F-250 equivalent). I have put as much if not more miles on the thing than the “working man” (sitting about 22,000 for this year). I do agree it is a monster of a vehicle and I do try to only use it for the towing of the RV. Any chance I get I’m riding my bike. A semi for this situation is overkill and an absurd price difference compared to the 2500.
I'm Dutch. I've never seen an f150 in the flesh (metal?). I know one guy with a large pickup, he has two very tall kids and has his own business. My parents had what was considered a large car, a Citroën Berlingo.
Suv's are becoming much more common though, and they are already often too big for our roads.
There is bigger, the f750 exists, is also fully customizable for commercial needs like dump truck duty or heavy hauling not needing a Peterbilt semi. There is a use case for these or they wouldn’t be made.
They absolutely are not commuter/weekend warrior vehicles like people use the f150 for and you’ll probably never see the 650 or 750 and recognize it
The F650 is a commercial vehicle. You can't buy one from Ford without a commercial account with them. You need a CDL to drive it. They're uncommon to see, and when you do, they're invariably used to do actual work.
Slight correction on my part. It's very easy to set one up to put it technically over the GVWR limit where you need a CDL. Ford makes it so it can be setup just below the limit.
A vehicle that size is essentially a 5.5 tons truck in Europe, which is the type of vehicle used for moving cargo or modify into a special purpose vehicles. It is not a recreational vehicle.
I do get it. The market around the F150 (and similar trucks at other manufactures) is ridiculous. There's luxury trim levels in there that offer two tone leather, which does not seem like the sort of thing anyone who works with their truck would want.
It's just that once you jump up to the F250 or above, you're mostly dealing with people who actually use their truck for truck things.
This is a really braindead and disingenuous take. The F650 is a commercial vehicle. Attempting to pretend that "Americans" drive these is moronic, because the number of private citizens who drive one of these as a personal vehicle is probably in the triple digits in a country with a population of 332,000,000.
I know it's fasionable to farm for upvotes these days by blaring AMERICANS BIG TRUCKS BAD. But no one is "driving these to McD's to get a McFlurry." Very, very few people own one of these just to be "decadent."
You may as well get on your high horse about Americans driving big rigs all the time while you're at it. Because they totally do!!!!! (It's true!) Ones who are truck drivers, you know, delivering the goods you rely on every day.
On the very outside edge of the graph, there are probably a few outliers who own one of these to tow something enormous: A big horse trailer or a box trailer with their airplane in it or something. I have never seen one of these on the road that wasn't an actual commercial vehicle like a tow truck or similar.
The problem with obviously ridiculous whinging like this is that it dilutes the actual useful message, which is that America's transportation infrastructure is fucked up, and our reliance on fossil fuels (not just trucks) is Too Damn High.
Ok, see to put thin in context a little bit, this truck is not for, nor is it even marketed towards regular people. This is a modular truck, so this is going to be converted into ambulances, tow trucks, bucket trucks, etc. This one does have a bed on it, but they had to get one from like an F-350 and modify it to get it to fit. And while you can buy this truck, it's not really a thing on roads here.
Just to add to this, and affirm that it's not intended to be a "go to McDonald's" truck, here is the actual product page for this model where it is marketed as a commercial vehicle.
What’s supposed to be the deal with the Unimog? It’s an off-road capable military/commercial vehicle that is used pretty much exclusively for those kinds of things. I don’t know the guy in the video, but calling the version that he had “luxurious” was patently absurd: Things like climate control can be legally required if you want to tell your employees to work in these vehicles in extreme weathers (and: Germany can get quite hot as well) and didn’t match at all what he was showing. Also: Because it has an additional cabin to transport more people it is a family-version? WTF? The primary use-case for that is if you need to transport several employees to somewhere. Which is not at all an absurd thing if you are talking farmers/military/fire-brigade/construction/…
By all means, criticize things like the Lariat or King Ranch trims of the F150. Those add luxury features that clearly have no work purpose. The F250 on up, though, is mostly for people who get shit done.
This is a work truck for commercial use. The bed in this image is an aftermarket mod done by someone with more money than sense. OP is just outrage baiting.
Do you just search the internet for vague American shit to get mad about? Been all over this country and I’ve never seen one of these outside commercial use.
I've never seen a "Ford F650" either. I live in California and most vehicles are small and nimble, including a lot of Teslas lately. Ten years ago a lot of Priuses.
Hell - my next-door neighbors have horses in their backyards and so do three houses directly across the street, and I've never seen one of these. Everyone has 150s or 250s.
You almost certainly have seen a F650, you just probably didn't recognize it because Ford only sells them incomplete (without the bed) and they are highly customized to fit their purpose. Commonly they are dump trucks, bucket trucks, heavy wreckers (tow trucks for transports), box trucks, etc. Here's some good pictures of what they can be used for.
Usually they aren't done up as passenger vehicles like this. I've seen them done up as box trucks, power line repair, tow trucks, construction site dump trucks, stuff like that. I also think the 450s and 550s are used for ambulances and things.
Why exactly commercial use? I know quite a few contractors who drive F250s, but that's not this. This is basically with with a doubled lift-kit. A single lift-kit makes some sense if you're offroading or (less stupid) driving on horribly maintained dirt roads.
And I'm obviously not OP, but I have absolutely seen modded trucks like this. Like in a Boston business park in one of the "Reserved" spots. Boy that CEO really needs to tow a house. LOL
I’m not defending the truck or America but I don’t think that one is common outside of industry. I live in the South and have never seen one. F150’s are very common, you see F250’s here and there, and F350s are basically exclusively work trucks. I didn’t even know it went up to F650 (the F750 apparently exists but seems like it’s really only for industry).
Ford’s web site has them “starting at” $80k but without a bed or any consumer features. It seems like they’re more the base for order things like fleets of tow trucks or dump trucks. I’m sure a mega rich person can buy one but it’s probably a weird custom thing that costs $200,000 and is missing whatever creature comforts go into vanity trucks.
650s and 750s make up most of those electric service vehicles (huge boxes of tools over the wheels and maybe a cherry picker) and Ambulances. Since ambulances are private businesses (not owned by a hospital wouldn't you know it.) They purchase their fleets and commission a box for the back. That's why you see so many different vehicles that look "converted" - because they are!
I’m not discounting your experience but I grew up and lived in Georgia for most of my life, and you are right that f150s are very common, but I remember many more 250s than here and there, I’ve only been gone two years
There are some morons here that are buying American made "trucks". More and more unfortunately, but it's still pretty rare. Luckily it's damn inconvenient to drive or park them in many places here.
Saw one the yesterday in Oklahoma. They look like gaint Tonka toys and are stupid. But Chevy made one in the early 2000's guess Ford wants into it now.
These should be outlaw. And I know how to solve the rolling coal but we need to bring back inspections for vehicles to sholve it.
It’s a medium duty truck. The 550 and 650 are most commonly found acting as either tow trucks or heavy machinery repair. Outlawing them is preposterous as they serve a purpose.
To be fair, Ford doesn't really make the final product here. They make the cab and chassis without a bed, and they're then shipped off to companies that turn them into commercial trucks like large tow trucks. But some company started buying them, slapping on a pickup truck bed, a lift, and a bunch of cheesy accessories and 'Murica flags, then charge idiots $100,000 more than they're worth so they can own the Libruls.
They're so rare to see that I'm not even mad, as long as some dipshit is wasting his life savings on this instead of donating it to shit politicians.
Edit: Ford doesn't even make or offer a pickup truck bed for these. IIRC, these beds are from F-250/350s and modded to fit.
This isn't really something you see on US roads, unless you replace the bed with a flatbed or box. No normal person owns one of these as a pickup truck.
Can confirm, the United States has lost it's mind. And yes, you have it down. The US goes abroad to secure resources for capitalist industry and has been promoting upsell and excess for some time now. Verhoeven's satirical advertising blurbs in Robocop (1987) were right on the mark.
Making us stupid and wanting to spend our money on $200 K-Pop bobble heads is exactly the world our corporations strive for, and the means to regulate them by a public-serving government was gutted in the 1980s by the Reagan administration. George W. Bush and Donald Trump (and the minimal pushback during the Clinton and Obama eras) are the natural result.
And in the next two decades you might get to see how the US does civil war and fascism. Every election lost by a Republican is challenged for legitimacy in an effort to neuter elections and create an autocratic one-party regime. Hopefully, this kind of shenanigan should sound dangerously familiar.
You got it right in one. We are out of our fucking minds, no small part to some willful efforts to turn the people of the US into mindless obedient consumers, but an epidemic of intergenerational mental illness has also contributed to Florida-Man-like conduct and truckers re-configuring their cars to belch soot as rolling coal.
We have indeed gone insane, but remember, not all of it is internal though. Let's not forget the influence campaigns being waged against America from various foreign nations that are trying to divide the country to cause it to be so busy fighting itself, that it effectively removes itself from the world stage, letting those nations basically do whatever they want without American interference.
The Chinese are spying to steal your technology, the Russians are doing pro bono campaign work for the most divisive candidates and the Americans are perfectly able to go off the rails without outside help
The problem is the backdoors to SHIELD used by the oligarchs that want to give it secret orders are ultimately going to be used by HYDRA as well. In fact, one of the failures comes from the belief that the HYDRA element infiltrating SHIELD can be detected and cleaned out as if with an antivirus scan.
We've seen this the way NSA turned from a communications security department to a surveillance and intelligence department (that is, from anti-surveillance to surveillance), so instead of exposing and closing exploits and vulnerabilities, they catalogued them in secret for their own use -- leaving them available for other interests, including rival foreign states.
I'd like to say we have the terror scare from the 9/11/01 attacks to thank for that, but federal law enforcement in the US like FBI and NSA have secret-police tendencies, and like to use their powers to harass or neutralize enemies of the current administration, so this has been going on for some time.
A recent Behind the Bastards two-parter about How Capitalism Ate Christianity takes it as far back as the Great Depression and resentment of the New Deal. Larry Lessig notes that Boss Tweed in the 1850s was already moving to turn the US into a plutocrat-run autocracy, hence the current government as an oligarchy with small democratic features.
Hopefully, this kind of shenanigan should sound dangerously familiar.
Ah, no worries, Europe is right behind you! The UK has completely fallen off the cliff and is a full blown kleptocracy, Hungary already has an openly fascist Government, and in Germany the Nazi party is currently clocking in at 20%+ in opinion polls, which would make them the 2nd strongest party in the next election. Yay! 🥳
i live in the south, you never see these things in real life, and i'm deep in truck country.
these things are comically impractical. like you couldn't pull into a parking garage, or much of anything with this. you'd be parking and walking to wherever you were trying to go. they would likely hit the limit sign and overhang on a typical McDonald's.
I drive an 02 golf. Before this, a Toyota 4runner (1st gen).
I'm not trying to brag... But I think it's not a "I'm too big for anything smaller" it's a "I'm too insecure for anything smaller", aka "my dick is too small for anything smaller" syndrome.
I've recently made friends with a group of Germans who have come to Canada. I'm astonished by the practicality and industriousness I've noticed in contrast to the idiocy of most Canadians.
I'm not saying you don't have any idiots in Germany. I'm just saying culturally, there seem to be some big differences.
Remember, don't let the dumbest of the world ruin your happiness.
It's been my experience as someone who's lived abroad a couple of years that in general, if you meet expats, they tend to be from the upper echelons of their native societies. They tend to be well educated and they have the time, the resources, the high-paying and internationally In-demand jobs, the language as well as the motivation to go abroad and experience something new. The expats you meet also don't have anything holding them back, like E. G. a sickly relative.
All these filters make it more likely to meet interesting people.
meh, I am 197cms and 150kgs and I can fit into a Skoda Fabia, but it's not like it's comfortable, I can also fit into my Hyundai i40 CW(or Estate or Combi), but I was on a safety training and If I set things up properly it's too small for me, but I fit more comfortably in there, still my knee sometimes hits the ESR button and turns it off, which they for some reason put in a very stupid place, (it's also under the heated seat buttons, so if you accidentally mishit it during winter, well that's the time you really need ESR). So I could definitely use a bigger car, or a different layout, I was looking at the new VW id.buzz, since it's a more upright seating position.
But yeah, if I can fit into a Skoda Fabia 1st gen, then Americans definitely have a big car fetish.
there are like 2 of these American Pick Up trucks where I live and it's fucking comical how much they stand out, I wanna take a photo when I remember, but seeing them parked between the normal sized European cars it's just something else.
"Prost, Kollege". Yeah we got our fair shair of idiots too. The mind virus of trucks is infecting some of our fellow citizens. But I guess high gas prices and smaller roads shielded us from much of this development. The next OPEC manufactured oil crisis will probably put an end to this. Anyway, "servus" and greetings to Canada.
To everyone outside the US, I don't believe I've ever actually seen one of these on the road. FWIW, I've lived in two US states and traveled the whole country regularly for work.
The unofficial tagline for these things is, "if you weren't born with a BIG something... Why not buy a BIG something? That'll show em all..."
Lol. I think some Europeans may have some... misguided beliefs on American culture. I live in Tennessee, a state stereotypically associated with these kinds of trucks. I have never seen a truck this large on the roads (at least not one that wasn't clearly for commercial use). You'll occasionally see an F250, but even those aren't too common.
Even the F250 is kinda meant to be kitted out as an RV, Bus, Box Truck, or Tow Truck. I've only a few times seen anything F350 or higher kitted as a "pickup", and those were either bullet-proof(heavy AF), limos, or both.
I read this article recently, which describes this sort of ridiculous behavior perfectly. "Oh, we can't drive big gas guzzling children killing trucks? I'm gonna buy an even bigger one! How about that?" These people are behaving like children being taught they can't have everything, and they're having a big tantrum about it.
These exist but are very rare. This is a commercial truck meant for things like small dump beds, bucket trucks, etc. There are a few shops that specialize in doing these types of custom builds for people who have way too much money and too little sense. There is a shop in my town that does this sort of work and they have something like this as a promotional tool but kost if their customers don't get anything this extreme.
This is a modified commercial truck. It's designed for heavy work, large construction, towing ridiculously large things, etc. Someone did custom work on it to make it look like a consumer vehicle.
This is aftermarket. The F650 is a Commercial truck which is sold by Ford incomplete (without a bed). You'll frequently see them built out for specific purposes like dump truck, tow truck, specific hauling, etc. (see Ford's page for some examples). I believe in most jurisdictions you need a commercial air-brakes driver's license to be able to drive one of these.
I promise, you're unlikely to see an "everyday American" driving an F650. There might be a literal handful of exceptions out there somewhere, but most people will only ever see this in industrial applications. Most often you'll see a 650 outfitted with a cargo bed or a (extra large, for towing big rigs) wrecker setup, or something large, robust, and industrial like that. This is just a publicity/marketing stunt. 99% of Ford F350 and larger trucks you will ever see will be industrial/cargo/heavy equipment moving/etc. industrial job vehicles. It's even relatively common to buy the truck, and buy the bed you need for your industrial application, custom. This is not something you'll see set up like a pickup truck in very many American driveways. The handful of those exceptions are the same sort of enthusiast niche that will hot rod customize to a ridiculous impractical degree a regular car, just to say they can. Very small group.
Reacting as if this is real is just as insane as thinking it's really common for somebody to trick out their excavator and drive it to McDonald's.
They've flatbeds. These are new crew trucks. When I worked construction, this would have been handy, as I drove out in a F750 loaded with gear and the crew cane in a f250 crew cab with their tool bags and a bit more gear in the bed. F250s are so heavy empty these days you can only haul 1500 lbs in them before you hit the max gvw, but they can tow a fuck ton.
Most people in these comments act like we just have car lots full of trucks just like this ready to be sold to the regular consumer. Just a couple searches on the internet or simply reading other comments in this thread will tell you that we don’t. To get something like this you’re paying well over $100,000 and you would have to specifically ask to have this set up. That’s if they even do it at a factory. This could very well be aftermarket. Trucks this size are meant for commercial use and are purchased with just the cab and open frame. After the purchase they would be delivered to whatever facility needed to outfit it for its specific purpose whether it’s a tow truck, electric service, waste management. Etc. Just because 1 douchebag decided to kit one these out as an oversized pickup and some YouTuber decides to market like “biggest and baddest” is a good thing doesn’t mean that everyone here is doing it. Like calm down. Most of us don’t like it either.
Look at it this way. Technically this isn’t the biggest and baddest for any everyday citizen of any nation. You could have a semi with a sleeper cab. Something like that would be massive for the everyday person, and for everyday use it wouldn’t be bad, it would be horrendous!
I hate oversized US wank tanks, but anyone can see just from the cover image that this isn't a factory product. As you said, it's sold as the cab & chassis. The tub and lift (and a bunch of other things) are custom.
That said, I completely agree that the US has lost it's fucking mind, but if we're going to make that assertion lets build it on something real.
I mean, this is an old trick that reappears anytime a medium or heavy duty truck manufacturer uses one of their existing pickup cabs on a heavier wagon. Chevy C40s used to be a popular candidate, they came in a frame length intended for a short tall dump box or fifth wheel mounting, same cab as the 73-87 gm half tons.
I may have seen millions of trucks in America. Never seen this or heard of it. You could have said a similar thing about the normal size (huge) trucks we have. But you trivialized the issue but complaining about a thing that is not even really a thing
The Ford F650 is part of a platform that, as you can see, is heavy-duty enough that you can put a proper dump bed on the back. It can be built many different ways, and the way that Ford will sell the vast majority of these trucks is that it will sell a cab and empty frame to another company, who will then build something else around it, some sort of heavy-duty thing that will see quite a lot of professional use, probably off-road more often than not. The massive ground clearance will look a lot more appropriate when this truck ends up where it belongs.
These things end up with buckets on the back, and used for powerline maintenance, or the entire back end becomes a steel locker for a bunch of welding and fabrication equipment. Once it is specced out properly, the size of it will make sense.
This model of truck is large and serious enough to also come with a proper, grown up diesel engine comparable to other heavy equipment engines in both weight and general durability. That it is the true purpose of the Ford F650, it is big and heavy enough to accept a respectable diesel engine for a proper dump truck, not the little baby diesels in the F150s, but one that is probably not available in anything smaller, a diesel that will actually last for 1 million km if maintained. It won't even be a Ford engine, it will probably be a Cummins or another brand common in American heavy equipment, not passenger cars.
I am not trying to flex when I say this thing isn't a toy. The transmission for it probably isn't available in any other Ford pickup. They're too small. Most of them will not spend a lot of time in the commuter lane, they'll be on job sites all day. Even Americans don't really drive the truck in the picture. The thing is in a class by itself.
Ford may as well sell a civilian version in case any Texas oil boys want the biggest truck on the block, but that just means adding a pickup truck bed to it, which goes with the rest of the cab in front. It certainly looks ridiculous. But somebody will want it to pull a really long horse trailer, so the bed back there is just a place to install a fifth wheel, the attachment point for a goose neck trailer. The owner will probably be somebody with a successful contracting business, somebody who can justify this thing as a proper business expense, since their other vehicle will say Caterpillar on it somewhere and has to also be towed on a trailer from job site to job site.
That is what the Ford F650 is for, and can do, it tows other heavy equipment around on public roads. It looks a lot less ridiculous with a skid loader and heavy trailer behind it. Park it next to a piece of proper construction equipment and it looks like a baby toy. It is small by heavy equipment standards, so that makes it maneuverable on construction sites.
The size of the current F150, the truck meant for average office workers to buy, that is the problem. It is unreasonable and no longer even fit for its original utility purpose. The modern F150 is too big, too expensive, and too cushy to be a farm truck, or a work truck on a job site. It is extremely common, overtall, and perfect for killing pedestrians.
The size of this thing, the F650, is not actually an issue. It is huge for defensible reasons, and it just looks crazy when you try to spec it out for civilian pickup use, because that's fuckng crazy. It looks striking in the marketing material, for sure. We're discussing the beast right now. Victory achieved for the marketing guy who insisted on offering this spec. Now even the Germans are aware of the truck.
But, oops, I can only assume that this entire "fuck cars" community is just the online version of those Just Stop Oil pricks, it's all the idea of some PR firm who want to make public transport advocacy look like a position for shitty assholes with no respect for the needs of others. So I assume you don't care about a proper explanation. I didn't realize I was here when I started typing. Too late now.
I wish Reddit would stay on Reddit, instead of growing into completely different websites like some sort of mold. But anyway, the F650 is not actually a problem.
Sales numbers are hard to find, but in 2021, they expected to see about 15,000 F-650s and F-750s combined. That's worldwide sales. The 750s are mostly box trucks and dump trucks. While there may be a few pimped out like the 650 here, sold to people that are compensating for certain size problems elsewhere, the vast...vast majority of the made are for business.
Lol, I'm 6'4" and I drive an old Japanese import, comfortably. It's an 89 supra, so it's not as good on gas as it could be. But certainly better than many other options. But I just love it. Hard to part with it.
And also literally every other vehicle I have gotten into was at least viable if not also comfortable, except for one, I tried to sit in a miata. I can safely say those are not intended for people my size. But I'm not particularly overweight. Certainly could be in better shape than I am, but most people who look at me would assume I weigh significantly less, just because height adds more weight than morst people account for. I don't know if being overweight would make a big difference in which cars are comfortable for my height. The only way I can really see it is if it cuts more into leg room.
Either way, it's definitely not "hard to find" cars a person my size can fit into.
What they forget to tell you is they are 6"4 in circumference... so yeah, they don't fit in just anywhere :)
Also: need space for their self defense bazooka.
America is overflowing with giant Emotional Support Vehicles for brittle ego low self worth, tiny penis people. It's fucking disgusting and I hate it so much. It's God damned unnecessary.
I mean... f*ck cars for sure, but exotic specialty work vehicles like this are not really the problem. This is a $150000 truck; nobody is buying this to impress the neighbors. They're buying it to haul trailers and stuff.
No one who buys this pulls a trailer big enough to justify the truck. If it was a real work truck it would have either no bed, a flatbed, or a toolbox bed.
Drove one once, air brakes so can't legally be driven by everyone (where I live anyway). The owner got it to bring fuel to his machinery, he got it used and it was cheaper than a similarly equipped F350...
I've seen these trucks with "not for hire" signs on them. If you have to add signage to your personal vehicle because it has been mistaken for a tow rig or commercial hauler, you might want to rethink your choices.
I’ve seen that on work trucks though. Like, it’s owned by a private construction company and need to let people know that they don’t use it for anything else.
But I can also see people using this on their personal vehicle.
At this point just classify them as minibuses like they did with classifying SUVs as light trucks. That'll hopefully put enough of the transit haters off buying them /s
Almost nobody can actually have one of these. Also, maybe my unpopular opinion, it is possible to have hobbies involving cars (or motorsports) and also be opposed to the foundational reliance in them for day to day use -- granted this is likely not the case with someone who buys a super duty truck just for glam points.
I did'nt. This is a Ford F650 Truck and when I stepped out of my Youtube Bubble I realized, it was marketed as the "biggest, baddest Truck on the road" for the everyday American.
American here, I don't think I've ever seen someone who uses something like this as their daily driver (I do not live in Texas. No one knows what goes down in Texas). I believe this vehicle is mainly for companies, and I believe (I could be wrong) that consumers can only go up to the F-250 or the F-350. Every time I've seen an F-650, it's been a company vehicle. They're also not very common here as well (at least where I am), and I believe I've only seen like 2 F-650s in my entire life. While that may be two too many for this community, I'm honestly surprised I haven't seen more. Apparently Ford has an F-750 as well, but I've only see one of them before, and it was very surprising. I hope this helps you understand! (At least from my point of view.)
Most of us wouldn't be seen dead in such a small truck. The back axle only has a single set of tires and the child crusher isn't even installed on the front grill.
They're either flexing or they think those gas-guzzling monstrosities will help them win the impending second civil war which is slated to start next year.
Been around for ages. They're usually outfitted as small lorries, catering trucks, moving vans, small fire engines, ambulances, tow trucks, etc. It's pretty rare to see one as a consumer vehicle.
Americas bloodiest wars have been fought in the middle east to secure oil,
Nah, neither our bloodiest nor to secure oil. Much more to do with neocon dickwaving imagining that they could impose their will on long-standing enemies, and a desire to feed the military-industrial complex and get some graft in as well.
In any case, I ask myself "What the fuck" when I see these monstrosities too. Luckily, they're not that common. I imagine they'll go the way of the Hummer in a few years. Just another form of conspicuous consumption.
Mass produced for the commercial market. F-650s aren’t meant for Bubba to show off to his friends, they’re meant for hauling freight, being tow trucks and dump trucks.
Yeah totally. I mean EVs aren't better right? The idea of producing a low emmissions efficient small car is not in any consumers mind. Oh people want EVs? Sure, lets give them an electric HUMMER or a cold rolled box of steel which slices pedestrians like a blade. I don't get, that people look at this and like it.
Eh, I'd say that's really roundabout, as the First Gulf War started because Saddam wanted to seize Kuwait's oil, and the US regarded Saddam gaining a massive influx of resources at the expense of the conquest of another country as undesirable, especially given the triumphalism of the early 90s. So in that sense, you could say it was to secure oil, but that's a bit roundabout, and the First Gulf War wasn't particularly bloody.
As silly as this thing is, it's not even remotely common. Pointlessly oversized trucks, sure, those are everywhere, but something this extreme is probably about as common as people driving an actual monster truck around on the road (I mean that's basically what it is, just with an oversized body instead of oversized tires)
6'6" and I drive a Volvo C30. Most comfortable hatchback I have ever driven. My only problem with it is all the goddamn SUVs on the road making it impossible at times to see what is ahead of me or around me. It's an arms race to go bigger and I refuse to participate. Just waiting for the day a proper 2 door electric hatchback hits the market so I can have an electric car that is not a behemoth on the road.
I have a Fiesta, quite possibly the smallest American car made i the past 10 years, and it would fit a 6'4 person in the front OR back just fine (leg room would be tight in back but plenty of head room).
Yeah, my little Kia Soul could seat a 6'7" guy in the passenger seat and still have enough room for an adult to sit behind him. Meanwhile I've been in trucks and SUVs that felt insanely cramped at 6'2". There are such things as little cars for big people and big cars only meant for little people.
Yeah. Part of that is how the big guy is proportioned. My dad and I are the same height but sit very differently in vehicles as he's more lower body and I'm more upper. He likes the seat wayyyyy back compared to me so I have to mess with things if I'm picking up his car for him.
For myself, I drive a Civic and it's generally comfortable, but - and this may sound dumb - it's got a sunroof gives me a bit more clearance. If I close the shade on the sunroof, my head is barely clear of the ceiling at my normal seat position and it's a bit claustrophobic. Pretty much every car I've had since my teens has one and it often feels very different driving vehicles without.
Two vehicles may be the same height and overall dimensions inside but just the seat+steering can make a notable difference in comfort between body proportions.
This truck is almost explicitly a fleet vehicle for construction and the like. Pretending encountering this $150,000 work vehicle is a common occurrence is super disingenuous.
If you're gonna be scared of trucks, we least be scared of the ones you actually see.
But what kind of work? It doesn't have a huge bed. The bed is really high and loading/unloading stuff will be difficult. It looks extremly heavy and big, so driving it on small dirt roads will be impossible. And you don't see vehicles like that here in Europe, even as work vehicles. The european industry is build on white sprinter vans. So what are you doing with this one here?
Yeah we have those. I think I've only ever seen 1 or 2. It's a drop in the bucket compared to all the semi trucks we rely on but that doesn't excuse the people who buy them to take their kids to school and buy groceries. Except for Shaq, I guess. I think he bought one and customized it so he can have enough leg room.
These types should do us all a favor and roll coal in the privacy of their closed garages.
On behalf of the 6’4” community, I miss my ‘98 Honda Accord daily. Stolen and mutilated only a couple road trips shy of 300k miles. Cut down in it’s prime.
Yeah.
Let's get upset at a car that even Americans posting here admit they've never seen on the road.
It's a piece of crap, but hardly a problem worth paying any attention to.
The F650 is pretty much the last thing you buy before you need a proper semi/tractor truck. I have seen a few, and known someone with one; and they routinely use it for cash hauls to make a living. Paying LTL (less than truck load) rates are very expensive and slow compared to hiring a contractor to haul something you need in a timely manner. The guy I knew that owned one used it to make a living hauling farm and construction equipment long distances.
Most F650's that are produced will not have a bed, because they either get fitted with a flatbed or a cargo box.
That's fair. The problem is when they get marketed as an even bigger peen-supplement to the people that already run an F350 for what's pretty much just grocery or fast-food runs (maybe a bit of muddin' because that makes sense with $80k+ worth of truck)
Just doing a quick search shows it's marketed as a commercial truck. Second image on the Ford website shows it with a dumper bed. Further down, it's an electrical utility truck with a cherry picker. Those are pretty reasonable applications, since it can come with a PTO.
This is probably some religious fanatics who believe God gave the earth to mankind to exploit to the limits of their desire. It's* fucking dumb.
Everyone just sits back and looks at these people with these massive trucks and wonders if they know that we all know about their dicks. We do.
If you drive this truck, most Americans recognize that there is something very broken inside of you, and we're ashamed that the US auto industry is allowed to precipitate this public nuisance. It's indistinguishable from how intellectually and socially mature Americans view people who make firearms part of their identity, and the industry that is allowed to precipitate the public nuisance that is the gun violence, another great American shame.
We are outnumbered. Send love.
I've never seen a consumer truck this large in person. Only special, heavy equipment, for farming, military, or construction is this large. It's a novelty toy, as others have said, for wealthy people with dumb luck. I don't know trucks well enough to say what models I see, but I do see some big trucks. This is a bit of a charicature. In fact this is a commercial truck that someone--seems like it's an option from Ford directly, or an independent custom shop--specced out as a luxury four-door pickup. Normally, this engine and chassis is specced out as a cab and frame, and sold out to commercial custom shops that are turning them into fire engines or freezer trucks, utility trucks, and what not. In Europe though, I think even the freezer trucks and fireengines are much smaller. One difference being that when the automobile came to our parts of the world, Americans had much more space, and I think it turn our common law of public ways and easements adapted to larger vehicles; like at some point the law had to recognize property rights granted for the purpose of transport (virtually everywhere you go) of people and goods had to adapt to the mode of transport: horse teams, to truck drivers (teamsters).
That car would terrify me to drive. My wife has a Rav4 which is a "small" SUV and it's too big for me to drive. My Prius is really too big for me. America doesn't do small cars anymore and it sucks.
Rav4's used to be awesome little cars with great visibility, shorter than a Camry and only a bit wider than a Corolla. Now they're basically Town & Country's
Corollas used to be about 25% smaller than they are now, if not more. I had a 1986 Corolla and it was so much smaller. It wasn't a microcar in size or anything, but compared to virtually any car on a U.S. road today, it was very small. I wish dealers would at least have an option to sell.
Fair enough, but my point was that even so-called "compact SUVs" are way too big for me and I wish there were more very small cars. About the only option anymore is a Mini and even they've gotten bigger. Give me an EV version of a classic Beetle or something- and not a jury-rigged one, one made by VW.
There's plenty of americans that hate cars like that. I live in a rural area where anyone needs cars. But normally I just ride my bike from place to place. But at night I have my dog and my high powered flashlights on foot.
As a European, that’s definitely an impractical, asshole vehicle. You couldn’t drive or park that anywhere here.
As a guy though? Gotta love a big, fuck you vehicle. It’s like a giant kids toy. Highly impractical, but I bet you’d giggle if you drove it. Only Americans could ever build something like that.
It's purely practical. Nobody uses this for parking in random places, you use it for work and for stuff like hauling a trailer or something that needs a powerful truck.
Come to the Netherlands. On the one hand you learn that a trailer can be hauled by anything. On the other hand, you'll see that this truck has a laughably small storage space compared to its road footprint.
Nah 2/5 vehicles look like this in the Midwest, at least. It's real sad, you just know these people only actually haul things maybe once a year at best and spend probably 4x as much as the rest of us on gas
We're going through the same thing you guys did eighty years ago. Maybe we'll finally see reason when our own Hitler and Eva Braun are cornered by the rest of the world, and shoot each other in the head to escape punishment. We'll send the cremated remains for you to dump in the Rhine, assuming any of us are still alive.
I recall at a place I used to work. There was an older guy who drove a similar monstrosity to work, GMC 6500... maybe. Im 6'3" and could easily walk under the mirrors.
I noticed after about a week that it hadn't moved. Finally, I got curious after 3 weeks of seemingly no movement from it and asked around.
Apparently, the guy that owned it, was climbing in to leave and fell backward out of it. Spent 2-3 months in the hospital recovering. No one needs one of these things
A lot of cherry picker trucks are 6500s, that's definitely a commercial truck.
I would dispute the assertions that no one needs those things, but I would agree that no one outside of a commercial setting is really going to need that much truck.
Apparently, the guy that owned it, was climbing in to leave and fell backward out of it. Spent 2-3 months in the hospital recovering. No one needs one of these things
Damnit, another mark against me on judgment day for laughing at this.
I've literally only seen F650's in the wild that had big box trailers on them being used as commercial hauling vehicles. This picture of one is the only time I've ever seen one seemingly for personal use.
Last time I got in a tow truck (incidentally my old pick up truck broke down) it was a brand new F350. It was 6 months old. They'd put 150,000 miles on it in that time, and were hoping to get 6 more months out of it.
That's not to refute your point, obviously tow trucks are a special case. It's just my fun tangential story.
Anyway I live in a fun area where, where I grew up was surrounded by farms and where I live now, 15 minutes away, is middle of the city. I've seen more of the big super duty trucks out in the country getting beat to shit than I do in the city, but there are definitely a lot of useless trucks around here.
I will say this about the older trucks, and why many guys who need a truck prefer them.
They're cheap, easy to work on, and have full size beds. Modern trucks are the opposite of that in every regard, giant expensive monstrosities that you can't fix yourself with a 3.5" bed, but room inside for 7.
Oh yeah my dad and mom live in the country, and they have a F150 from like 2002
and yeah I guess I was pretty reductive in that certain jobs like towing need something like that truck. It's just not what I normally see lol. I see more pickups when I walk through the neighborhoods with two-stall garages and fancy homes than I do from actual workers, but there's always the exception
There are at least 2 of these rolling around where I live.
They're built on the biggest version of that truck, which normally requires a special license. This one however, you can get with a normal class C license.
American here. F650s are absolutely NOT marketed as consumer vehicles. The picture is a custom build, as far as I can tell. They don't come like that from Ford. I've never seen a f650 on the road that wasn't some kind of work truck or utility vehicle.
A quick look at Ford's website tells me most (maybe all) f650s have a bare frame in the back with the expectation that whatever person (or more likely a company) who buy it will outfit it with whatever equipment they need.
The biggest trucks I see driven by commuters with any regularity are f250s, which are definitely still ridiculously large, but it's not quite as silly as you seem to think.
And on McDonald's, I'm fairly certain that a f650 would be incapable of going through some drive-thrus because they're too tall. Really very few people own trucks like the one in the photo. I've never seen one, and I live in the southeast where pickup trucks are obnoxiously popular.
We will be the bad guys in WWIII. ...Huh, I been saying that line for 15 years but we really are the bad guys in the "any day now" WWIII that seems to be brewing.
That tracks tho. We've been the bad guys in basically every war since WWII.
If you need a lot of loading capacity, a van is almost always the better choice.
Especially when you sometimes need to carry a lot of people and other times a lot of material. You can just take the back seats out or fold them down, now you can use the same space for two different purposes.
And you can even install shelves for your tools and material, they are also protected from the weather and some thieves.
I have a Nissan NV-200 (which is almost too small to be considered a van) and I can seat 7 people or I can remove/fold away the backseats and I can suddenly carry more than I almost always need.
It is Diesel and right now I get 7l/100km (33mpg) even though I dont have a fuel saving driving style. I did some experiments when I was on vacation, if I drive a constant 120kph (74mph) I get 6l/100km (39mpg). If I drive around 90kph (56mph) behind commercial trucks, not hugging them but following them so I dont hold up traffic anymore than they do, I get between 4 and 5l/100km (59-47mpg).
Try doing that with a truck, especially when its got a big V8 engine that basically just burns fuel for nothing.
If I had to regularly tow a midsized excavator on a large gooseneck trailer, this size of truck would be a reasonable - if moderately excessive - option.
Otherwise, outside of “let’s haul some large earthmoving equipment” use cases, it is stupid to own a truck like this.
American here. Calm down, it's a specialized vehicle that costs more than a hundred thousand dollars with an engine designed to tow extremely heavy industrial products for non-commercial use outside of what typical truck manufacturers sell for typical industrial shipping such as semi-trucks.
No, fucker, nobody is going to buy that and drive to McDonalds, you are delusional that Cleetus can afford that thing.
See, the difference between this lemmy fuckcars, and the subreddit, is that, on the subreddit, I would get plenty of people who fell for the bait completely. On this lemmy, most of the top posts are people specifically refuting the bait. Of course, this does nothing to disincentivize the behavior, and increases the engagement of the post, compared to other, better posts, but it's still nice that the userbase could recognize the problems with this rather than just kind of buying in mindlessly because it seemed to agree with their political in group.
Holy crap. At work I drive a Chevy 3500 hd dumptruck with a plow and that thing feels almost too big to be on the road. Ford has completely lost it making a truck twice the size.
It's a personality, "My ignorance is greater than your knowledge." and there is an entire cult around it for a long long time. The United Part of the United states is just united in landowners vs havenots. Rather be a proud moron than a 'havenot' even if you have to bend your entire greymatter in the wrong direction to do so.
And in some states something like this can be the first car for some 16-years-old. You don't even need any special licenses to drive this monstrosity, imagine how many lives are being wasted because there is no proper regulation in place. Guys, you have to do something with it, it's not just your safety, it's the safety of everyone around you!
When you see Mad Max Scenes from the original Film of the 80s. It's so laughable. If ever some kind of civil war scenario breaks out in the Us. Nevada and Texas will host real life Mad Max with armored tank trucks guzzling 30l pro 100km build by Dodge. (I know I know, dont make me write it in gallons.)
What is with the comments in here? OP is spot on with their analysis. If it's not the actual truck from the pic, it's a jacked up 90's piece of shit with 34s, or it's a simple F150 dual cab, or hell, a 3 row Suburban. We drive fucking huge vehicles.
Go get in an MG, or ride a motorcycle...you'll understand how hardcore the excess has gotten here for vehicle size.
This is what's known as a relief valve. When an American has a very small penis and has trouble accepting this, he buys one of these trucks so he can feel like a Big, Strong, Manly Man on his way to the office or supermarket. This soothes him, and prevents more harmful attempts to demonstrate his virility. What might a German do if he found himself in this situation?
No, that is its mind. There's gonna be a bunch of apologists on here trying to emphasize the diversity of their culture and denying the significance of that horrific abomination you've pointed out, but they're American, which means they're in denial, and their brains short circuit a bit when you poke them in their cognitive dissonance. The fact remains that there is enough of a market for that vehicle for Ford to produce it, which in itself is sufficiently appalling to justify everything you said, which was really quite mild.
That truck is literally a picture of the American mind. Doesn't matter the morality of it, that went out the window after ww2 anyway - if there's money to be made, they're gonna go for it, consequences for everyone else being by definition Somebody Else's Problem. Even though they might as well be shitting into their own lungs. More dissonance!
As though "yeah, but look at me!" is any sort of a response to this shit anyway. It's a country that venerates ego, what are you gonna do
You sound angry and come off pretty annoying to be honest This looks like a project car someone customized for himself. Do you get this angry at people who purchase power boats? Also, I think Germans are more obsessed with McDonald’s than normal income Americans.
"Is the end goal really to drive a Monster Truck to McDs to get a McFlurry? Americas bloodiest wars have been fought in the middle east to secure oil, bombing nations to rubble."
You really think America is actually like the satirical shit they show on TV? How ignorant.
Instead of driving something that is almost always too big and burns fuel and money, why not get a small trailer (or just rent one)?
Maybe it is better that our fuel prices are higher here, because then people actually have an incentive to buy something efficient instead of wasting resources.
The US used to have good public transit until it was torn down by the car lobby, and cities were only allowed to almost exclusively consist of single family homes with large yards front and back and no stores closeby, its no wonder people need cars. (Street maintenance also burns so much money that it cripples local governments)
Just imagine how nice it would be if the US had as many high speed train lines as they do highways. It would be quicker than driving your car.
While I dont want to ban cars completely, it would be nice if cars werent the only option and car owners would pay the costs that the cars create.
